It’s hard to comprehend the enormity of Terrebonne’s flood-protection needs until you see the barge floodgate under construction at Bollinger Marine Fabrication’s yard in Amelia. The structure sits four-stories high and will grow even taller after a 13-foot floodwall is added to the top. It will be as long as a football field when finished.

This is what will be required to close off the Houma Navigation Canal during a powerful storm surge.
